Cartoon Illustration of Oscar Wilde in Philosophy Now Magazine
I WAS COMMISSIONED to produce a cartoon illustration of Oscar Wilde in Philosophy Now Magazine. One of my regular clients, they simply let me know what the contents of the magazine are going to be and then let me decide what I should illustrate. Given the remit of ‘Irish Philosophers’ I chose the literary giant Oscar Wilde for his famous quote “We’re all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars”.
The process of drawing a cartoon illustration is quite simple. I come up with two or three rough ideas, in pencil, one of which is approved of, sometimes with amendments, by the client. Then I go ahead and produce a base black ink drawing which is then scanned in for digital colouring. Currently, I do the final colour layers on the iPad Pro in Procreate, partly because it’s more portable than being stuck at the iMac using Photoshop.
