Cartoon sold at exhibition
THE PROFESSIONAL CARTOONISTS’ Organisation invited me to send a cartoon joke in for their cartoon exhibition in the legendary Soho establishment Patisserie Maison Bertaux. ‘Cartoonists at the Café’ features over fifty cartoons from the organisation’s membership, many of whom are regular contributors to the nation’s newspapers and magazines.
Out of a selection that I sent to organiser and Private Eye cartoonist, Jeremy Banks (Banx), this one (above) was chosen and was sold within the first few days. Inspired by a real blue plaque I saw in Putney (below), it just takes a little lateral thinking (literally) to arrive at the gag.
Maison Bertaux, at 28 Greek St, London W1D 5DQ, is a historic establishment started in 1871 by the eponymous M. Bertaux. As it says in their website:
“Maison Bertaux’s pastries have delighted the widest spectrum of Londoners for over 150 years, from Virginia Wolf to Karl Marx, from Alexander McQueen to Derek Jarman and, of course, the bohemians of Soho. Still baking daily, upstairs above the tea room, Maison Bertaux is now presided over by its one time Saturday Girl, Michele.”
The Cartoon Exhibition is continuing for as long as the proprietors wish, so it is well worth your while to get down there now and enjoy some excellent cartoons along with the delicious pastries and cakes!
